John Squillace, CEO & Founder of Helix Wireless, opened his keynote by reflecting on how technology evolves and how MVNOs need to evolve with it. He started with a story from his early years online:
“Back in 2000, the internet was still in its infancy,” John said. “You had email, chat rooms, maybe some downloads, but you couldn’t shop online or customize a pair of Nike sneakers. Social media didn’t exist. And yet, here we are today, seeing that same evolution in mobility.”
Latching onto historical milestones, from Samuel Morse’s first telegraph to Martin Cooper’s first mobile phone call, he illustrated how the industry has always been about innovating how to connect people faster, better, and more efficiently.
“As the world evolves, speed and agility are paramount,” he explained. “If you want to move slowly, you need deep pockets. If not, you need to move with or ahead of the market.”
Focus on Customer Journey and Growth
John emphasized that for MVNOs, customer satisfaction is number one. “Your job is to present value to acquire customers and then keep them with excellent service,” he said. “Growth comes from understanding your niche, how you target it, communicate with it, and ensure the transaction flows smoothly.” He highlighted the challenges of onboarding customers and delivering seamless experiences, drawing on his own time at Verizon: misplaced phones, delayed deliveries, and frustrated customers were all avoidable with thoughtful process design.
Technology as an Enabler
He also explored the role of technology in enabling rapid MVNO launches. “eSIMs are an incredible accelerator,” he said. “You don’t need to wait days for a SIM card in the mail. The customer journey must be seamless; you must explain how it works, what you deliver, and why it’s easy for them.”
Helix Wireless Overview
As of January, Helix Wireless became the largest mobility partner for AT&T. Its core innovation is the SmartSIM, a multi-network global data SIM that connects to over 700 carriers worldwide. This carrier-agnostic technology has proven particularly valuable in verticals like railroads, where John shared a case study of a U.S. railroad company reducing data costs by 66% by replacing multiple SIMs with a single SmartSIM. Other verticals include point-of-sale systems, failover solutions, and telemedicine.
Rapid MVNO Launch with Solo API Stack
Helix Wireless’s platform, called Solo (Single API Stack), allows MVNOs to launch rapidly, reducing setup from months to as little as two weeks, or even days for pure API integrations. The platform is designed to decrease churn and increase revenue, giving operators access to more products than traditional wholesale channels through its Apex partnership.
Innovative Product Offerings
John highlighted several products that differentiate Helix Wireless:
- Device Financing: MVNOs can offer smartphones on multi-month payment plans, keeping customers “sticky” and freeing up marketing capital. One recent rollout financed 2,500 phones at a fraction of the upfront cost.
- Fiber to the Home (FTTH): Enables MVNOs to create double or triple play packages, enhancing customer retention and revenue.
- Global Data and eSIM Use Cases: The SmartSIM doubles as a secondary eSIM for travelers, offering local data at lower costs without restrictions.
Expertise and Support as a Differentiator
Helix Wireless benefits from deep in-house expertise, including former AT&T team members who understand plan logic and APIs. This experience ensures smooth integration, effective onboarding, and 24/7 support for MVNO partners.
Partnership Opportunities and U.S. Expansion
For MVNOs looking to enter the U.S. market, Helix provides access to AT&T’s network, with Verizon and T-Mobile integrations planned for next year. Helix also helps navigate complex U.S. telecom taxes and supports MVNOs aiming to expand internationally with local voice, SMS, and data offerings.
Conclusion
In closing, John stressed that MVNOs today must combine speed, agility, and customer-centricity to thrive. By leveraging technology, understanding niches, and working collaboratively, operators can deliver value, retain customers, and scale rapidly in a market that evolves daily.
